Summary Draft 1: Tapping Tech for Smoother Traffic

According to Tay (2018), land-scarce Singapore faces the perpetual challenge of balancing density with liveability. More advanced traffic management measures are needed for Singapore to deal with the increasing vehicle population and a greater and more complex road system. The Intelligent Transport System (ITS) was introduced by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) to process and collect data automatically. Not only does ITS boost traffic coordination and control, but it also gives real-time traffic information to help smoothen journeys. With the implementation of ITS, Singapore’s traffic safety and efficiency have been improved. Singapore also topped the 2017 Global Smart City Performance Index by Juniper Research. On top of that, transport technology in the city-state is constantly upgrading for better equity and efficiency with enhancement of traffic lights and satellite ERP system. Having a forward-looking approach, together with strong transport policies and a citizen focus, Singapore can pursue improving urban mobility.
